In Haiti, they don’t value running like they value soccer. I ran a half-marathon in Port-au-Prince last year. There weren’t many spectators. People weren’t very interested. But then I ran a marathon in Cap-Haitien in January. It was better organized, and more people were cheering us on, maybe because it’s less congested in Cap-Haitien. It’s easier to stand in the street and watch. The police were able to keep the cars far away from the runners, and spectators were handing out water along the route. At the end, they gave out fruit. Running would be more popular in Haiti if the authorities organized more races like that. Having a race gives me a vision, a goal.
